Albuca aurea is a broad-leaved, deciduous, perennial bulb that grows to a height of around 50 cm. Endemic to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, it has broad, sword-shaped leaves and a clump-forming habit, spreading slowly in the right conditions. It grows on stony clay slopes and flowers primarily between September and December. Its unusual flowers have delicate yellow and green vertical markings arranged alternately. They are borne on long pedicels and held in a loose raceme, attracting pollinators and bees.

Once established, Albuca aurea is drought tolerant and prefers full to mostly sun. It grows actively during the summer months and supposedly becomes dormant in late winter, although it does appear to grow year-round in sheltered positions in the Algarve. It thrives in average, gritty, lean and well-drained soil. To this end, the soil should be improved before planting by mixing in about 20% gravel and sand with some compost. To ensure good drainage, it is best to plant on a gentle slope, as this prevents water from pooling around the plant in clayey soils. It is suitable for container planting and rock gardens.
