Plant Details
Plant Type: Arbusto grande
Aspect: Full sun but will take partial shade
Foliage: Thin glossy green, 3 - 8 cm
Flower colour: Yellow
Flowering period: Summer - but almost any time if the weather is warm
Size - height & spread : 2,5 - 3 metres
Soil type/requirements: Best in deep free draining with added organic matter
Water requirements (established plants): Monthly deep irrigation in high summer
Native Distribution: Central America

An open ornamental shrub or small tree which grows to about 2.5–3 m, with glossy green willow like leaves and long funnel shaped fragrant yellow flowers. It can be clipped like a hedge and responds well to pruning in summer, but is probably best grown as a small tree here in the Algarve. Drought resistant and tolerant to high temperatures once established. All parts of this plant are toxic if eaten, but otherwise it is quite harmless. It is frost tender so needs some protection, but even if damaged by frost it can be lightly pruned in Spring to remove any damage. It responds well to pruning and can be formed into a much denser bush if required, it is worth mentioning that in many tropical countries it is used as a hedge. Minimal watering in winter, but make sure they get plenty in late spring until they are well established.
