---------------------- : -
Pyracantha coccinea, commonly known as scarlet firethorn, is native to southern Europe, extending from southern France and north-eastern Spain through the Balkans, Greece and Italy to the Caucasus region and western Asia, including Turkey, Lebanon and Iran. This thorny, evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub has been cultivated in gardens since the late 16th century for its ornamental qualities, including clusters of white flowers in spring and showy orange-red berries in autumn. When regularly clipped, it forms one of the densest hedging plants and will create an impenetrable barrier. Furthermore, it can be mixed with other species, such as Rhamnus, myrtle, pistachio and roses, particularly Rosa canina, to form a dense, informal hedge that will benefit wildlife. I've also seen it clipped 50–75 cm above the ground to form what looks like a raised lawn in parks in southern Spain. The plants were planted 50 cm apart with meandering maze-like corridors that were used by the gardeners to clip them.
More information on this plant
This plant is often overlooked by gardeners, perhaps due to the misconception that it is not native or tough enough to survive. However, it is well-adapted to a variety of conditions and thrives in full sun to partial shade, tolerating drought and poor soils once established. The fruit is bitter and astringent, making it inedible when raw. However, the fruit can be cooked to make jellies, jams, sauces and marmalade. The berries appear in late summer and autumn and persist into winter, providing long-lasting ornamental interest, as well as being a valuable food source for wildlife during this period. The species is commonly known as scarlet firethorn due to its vibrant red berries, but berry colour can vary significantly depending on the cultivar. Pyracantha coccinea produces berries in orange and scarlet hues.
Pyracantha angustifolia, an Asian species, is also frequently found in gardens, as are hundreds of horticultural cultivars of both species. P. angustifolia has narrower leaves and is noted for its dense, thorny thickets and yellow-to-orange berries. P. coccinea (native to Europe) and P. angustifolia (native to Asia) are known to hybridise freely, especially in cultivation. While natural hybridisation in the wild is less well documented, horticultural hybrids are common due to overlapping flowering times and shared pollinators. We sell both the true species and some suspected hybrids, taking our seeds from plants that we find growing in particularly harsh conditions, as we believe these are the most valuable for dry gardens.
