Common Yarrow is a very useful garden plant with a spreading rhizomatous growth form. The flower forms a white flat-topped cluster. The inflorescences are a valuable food source for many species of insects, making it a frequent component of butterfly gardens. The plant has a sweet scent similar to that of chrysanthemums, so powerful that it may be irritating to some.

It prefers well-drained soil in full sun, but can be grown in less ideal conditions. Suitable for exposed coastal situations.

Yarrow has been found with Neanderthal burials, suggesting its association with human species dates to at least 60,000 years ago. It has a wide range of uses in traditional medicine and as a result has an enormous list of regional common names.
