The Agapanthus inapertus thrives in the Mediterranean climate of the Algarve, with its moist, damp winters and hot, dry summers. This species is found at higher altitudes in the Drakensberg Mountains, where it tolerates cooler conditions and prefers the well-drained soils and full sun. A. inapertus is typically deciduous, dying down in winter. This makes it somewhat hardier than most other agapanthus species, making it better suited to areas that experience colder winters. As it dies down in winter, it is useful for planting alongside other winter deciduous plants that require seasonal clearing or cutting back.
Like other agapanthus, it benefits from a sunny, well-drained position and is drought-tolerant, thriving in a gravel garden that isn't watered. However, it performs best with regular, deep watering during its growing season. For optimal growth, it should be planted in improved soil with plenty of incorporated organic matter. Apply plenty of water in spring if there is no natural rainfall. During summer, it will benefit from the occasional deep watering. Agapanthus inapertus is also hardy in coastal areas, tolerating sea winds and salty air.
Flowering typically occurs in summer, with blooms lasting 4–8 weeks. The plant produces umbels of trumpet-shaped flowers on sturdy stalks. The flowers are usually deep blue or purple, though it hybridises easily and may produce other colour variations. To maintain vigour, it is recommended that the plant is divided every four to five years, especially if it shows signs of reduced flowering or yellowed, dead leaves.
