Plant Details
Plant Type: Low growing, clump forming, shrubby fan palm
Aspect: Full sun, slopes, exposed sites. Will tolerate some shade.
Foliage: Fan palm. Leaf stalks are spiny
Size - height & spread : Eventually 2 - 5 metres but more commonly half this height
Soil type/requirements: Not really fussy. Poor dry soils are well tolerated
Water requirements (established plants): Extremely drought tolerant. Obviously grows much larger if given some water in summer
Native Distribution: Mediterranean Basin
---------------------- : ----------------------

European dwarf fan palm. Native to Portugal. A small clumping palm growing to around 2 metres tall and wide on average although in the right conditions they can become larger (3 metres plus). Long lived, drought adapted and able to shoot again from its roots after wildfires. These palms are a good specimen to have in larger areas of planting that need some structure or greenery, particularly where there is little or no water available.

Interestingly - In Portugal and Spain Chamaerops seed is largely dispersed by badgers, so if you have seedlings sprouting on your land you've probably got badgers too...or buy a palm to feed your badgers!

Many larger mature plants available in the nursery, some multi-stemmed clumps but also single trunks, 35 - 80 L pots. Please enquire.
