The sago palm - but not a true palm, this name derives from the shape of its leaves. It can grow to 5-6 metres and with age it will likely form multiple stems, however this can take 50 years. More common is a size of maybe 1,50 M high by 2 m wide. The foliage can be extremely viscous having needle like tips to the leaves, so it needs to be planted away from areas used by people - a frequent mistake is to plant a small one close to a path only to find it out-grows this space within a few years, particularly if irrigated during summer. We think it looks at its best when viewed from above, for example on a lower terrace or below a balcony. This way you will see the golden inflorescence each year.

It grows well in the Algarve and is a good alternative to a true palm tree. The Cycas can withstand frosts down to -10C. We have various sizes available, from 100 to 175 cm diameter crowns.
