Euphorbia xantii
Plant Details
Euphorbia xantii, commonly known as Baja spurge or cherry blossom euphorbia, is a drought-tolerant succulent shrub native to Baja California in Mexico and parts of Sonora and Sinaloa. It is popular among gardeners for its small, pink and white flowers that bloom in clusters resembling baby's breath or cherry blossom from mid-winter through to late spring, and sometimes into summer. The plant has slender, pencil-thin, grey-green stems and a woody base with small, ovate-lanceolate leaves that often fall off during hot, dry periods. It grows to a height of 150–250 cm with an equal spread, often forming dense colonies through underground rhizomes and self-seeding.

This striking ornamental plant attracts insects and birds, including local warblers. Ideal for rock gardens, dry slopes, xeriscapes, and container planting (where its spread can be managed), this plant should be grown in full sun and well-drained, sandy or rocky soils. It is often used as a background or screening plant. Hardy to -5°C, it may suffer damage in colder conditions, but often recovers from the base. The plant is winter deciduous, shedding its foliage in response to heat or drought. Like most Euphorbia species, it is known to be toxic, producing a milky sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Therefore, protective gear such as gloves and goggles is recommended when handling or pruning. It is best to plant it in an area where it will have enough space in the future and will not require pruning.
