More robust than the white varieties, this large Gaura has dark green to dark red foliage. The flowers can be very variable, but range from a wine red through to a dark pink. The flowers are borne on stems that grow 50–100 cm tall. At ground level, there are densely clustered branched stems growing from an underground rhizome. Guara grows best in full sun and can survive lengthy periods of drought. They can be planted in drifts as a single species or as this species is particularly distinctive it looks good as a specimen amongst other perennials or grasses.
