Hymenosporum flavum
Known as the Australian or Native Frangipani, this is another plant that isn't what it says it is, so not a frangipani, not even slightly related, however the flowers, although smaller, do resemble and smell a little like the true frangipani. This is a forest tree tree growing to 8 metres (up to 20 in its forest habitat), covered in 3-4 cm fragrant flowers in spring. The flowers start off functionally male and a pale white with lemon tinges, then they gradually turn to a deeper golden yellow, changing over 5 days into female flowers.
They make a good garden specimen, their open layered canopy lends itself to underplanting as they don't cast any strong shade. When in flower they attract bees and other insects and interestingly the tree is noted as having low flammability in wildfires. Drought tolerance, speed of growth and eventual size will depend a lot on the soil you have, an uncompacted soil with some additional organic matter and annual mulching with the same should help the tree establish. They have low water requirements once established, but will benefit from one or two annual deep watering's in summer.
When young these trees are susceptible to frost and cold damp weather. For this reason we don't sell them until they are a couple of seasons old and about a metre or so in height.
