Lavandula viridis
Plant Details
Lavandula viridis, also known as Green Lavender, White Lavender or Yellow Lavender, is a small, highly aromatic evergreen shrub native to southern Portugal and southwestern Spain. It is one of the more unusual species in the genus and is a natural fit for Mediterranean dry gardens.
This compact, bushy subshrub grows to a height and width of 50–70 cm (occasionally reaching 100 cm), and has narrow, linear, slightly sticky, pale-green leaves measuring 2.5–4 cm in length. This is a clear contrast to the grey-green leaves of most other lavenders. The short (2–5 cm) flower spikes have white corollas and greenish-white bracts that quickly turn brown, giving an overall creamy-green effect. The leaves have a distinctive pine and lemon scent when crushed (unlike typical lavender).
It tolerates approximately five months of summer drought once established and is adapted to poor, stony, acidic soils in dry scrubland and open pine/oak woodland. It prefers a full sun, sheltered position; semi-shade reduces flowering. Overwatering is the main cause of death. Hardiness: down to roughly −5 °C. In colder or wetter winters, protection and sharp drainage are needed.
