Malvaviscus arboreus var. penduliflorus is a species of flowering plant in the hibiscus family.

It has various common names - wax mallow, Turk's cap, Turk's turban, sleeping hibiscus, manzanilla, manzanita (de pollo), ladies teardrop and Scotchman's purse.

An interesting upright shrub, bearing a profusion of large red flowers, that perpetually appear as if they're just about to open fully, but never do. Blooming reliably from spring through summer, but will continue throughout a mild winter. They add a cheerful pop of colour at a time when many summer-flowering plants have fizzled out and cooler season plants haven't yet peaked. Flowers are attractive to birds, butterflies and bees.

They can reach up to 3 metres tall and wide, so be sure when selecting a site that you give them the space to grow. If left unpruned it makes a nice large shrub with well-spaced branches, giving it an open appearance, but it can be kept much smaller and tighter with regular pruning and even make a nice tight hedge. It is an easy-care shrub that requires little maintenance and is drought tolerant once established. A spring-time pruning that removes half of the previous year's growth can help keep your plants healthy and looking great.

Plant in full sun to light shade and irrigate occasionally in shallow or unimproved soils. They are hardy, and even after prolonged frost, they will sprout back again in spring.
