Known as Indian Hawthorn, due to the large displays of white flowers, similar to European Hawthorn. It will flower sporadically all through the year, followed by attractive deep purple to black berries that stay on the plant until the following season. A useful plant for garden wildlife as a source of nectar for insects, and berries for birds. It is grown for its decorative flowers and is popular in bonsai culture. The fruit is edible when cooked, and can be used to make jam.

Although the common name suggests it is from India, it is in fact native to the far Eastern countries of Japan, Korea, Taiwan and parts of China. In Japan, it has been used for centuries to make a dark brown dye for silk, by boiling its dried bark or chopped up twigs.

It is a versatile plant, being suitable as a low hedging species or as an individual feature plant. It grows slowly and compactly. The glossy green leathery foliage is wind resistant and suitable for coastal gardens. A deep watering once per month in the height of summer will be beneficial, but not essential. It can withstand severe drought once established in a decent soil.

Plant in full sun. Prune after flowering if necessary to reshape, but otherwise it requires little maintenance as a shrub.
