Soil type/requirements: Fertile moisture retentive

Native Distribution: Southeast Europe

A close relative of Salvia nemorosa, Salvia amplexicaulis is native to Southeast Europe. Violet-blue flowers with prominent reddish-purple bracts grow closely together in whorls, forming a nearly continuous spike, with plants reaching between 50 and 75cm tall. Dormant in winter and therefore quite hardy. Cut back at the end of summer to tidy the old flower stems, and it makes new growth in Spring. It is very attractive to pollinating insects.

This Salvia has most impact when planted in small groups and will look its best in a soil improved with some compost or organic matter. A light mulching of the soil in the hottest summer months will help prolong the flowering period.
