Rough Sage. Pale blue and white falcate type flower, the hood being a lovely pale blue, whilst all the bottom lobes are white. These are cupped to act as a landing place for bees and other insects and to guide them further into the flower. It can form a dense shrub almost 2 metres high. Very strongly scented foliage, the leaves are dotted with glands that omit a pleasant aroma when touched. It is well adapted to survive fires and is known to sprout again from its woody root-stock after been burnt through. It does need some cutting back after flowering to keep the plant vigorous. Frost hardy and drought tolerant, good in coastal areas and in sandy soils. Plant in full sun with other shrubs and perennials that enjoy similar growing conditions.
Traditionally used for a wide variety ailments such as coughs, colds, diarrhoea, colic, heartburn and flatulence. A tea, to be sipped slowly a few times a day, is usually made from the fresh or dried leaves and flowers.
